Making a Difference in South City

The City of Tallahassee, in partnership with the Tallahassee Democrat, United Way of the Big Bend and the South City Revitalization Council/ Neighborhood Association, to host the South City Health and Fitness Day on Saturday, October 25. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Greater Love Church of God in Christ, located at 524 E. Orange Avenue.
 
“The City is committed to working with the community and helping residents of South City,” said Mayor-Elect Andrew Gillum, lead commissioner on community issues in South City. “We want people to come out and enjoy some fun fitness and wellness activities that encourage positive changes related to nutrition and exercise.”
 
The Tallahassee Democrat will kick off the event at 8:30 a.m. with a Move Walk to get everyone energized. The 2-mile walk will begin and end at Greater Love Church of God in Christ and take participants on a tour of the neighborhood. At 9:30 a.m., there will be physical fitness activities for all ages, including events coordinated by the Florida State University Women’s Basketball Team, U.S. Marine Corps and Titus Sports Academy.
                             
With a focus on healthy nutrition, the Tallahassee Food Network will facilitate community gardening workshops and distribute iGrow buckets, which are self-watering containers used for growing a mini food garden. Healthy snacks will be available including fresh fruit provided the City’s Your Own Utilities. In addition, Utilities will be on hand to share tips to help residents live healthy and be energy fit.
 
The Tallahassee Fire Department will be on scene sharing information about the “Where’s the Beep” initiative. This effort is focused on reminding the community to test their smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly. The Tallahassee Police Department will also be on site with child identification kits.
 
This event emphasizes the importance of physical fitness and proper nutrition and is part of the national Make A Difference Day, which was created by USA Weekend Magazine, a Gannett company. The South City Health and Fitness Day is part of the City’s on-going work in partnership with other public and private organizations, local clergy, community leaders and residents to help improve the quality of life in South City.
