With a goal of finding homes for 10,000 lovable mutts across the country, National Mutt Day is held on both July 31 and December 2 to celebrate the many wonderful attributes of mutts and promote their adoption. The Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC) will participate in National Mutt Day by offering free adoptions on all mixed breed canines this Thursday, July 31. Currently, there are more than 50 puppies and dogs at the ASC ready and waiting for loving homes.
Mutts, typically defined as any mix of dog breeds, come in all sizes, shapes, colors and patterns. He or she might have a long snout or a short nose, ears that flop or stand straight up, a stubby tail, stubby legs – or both! They are just as smart, playful and highly capable as their purebred counterparts and make great pets or service animals. Mutts also tend to be healthier, better behaved and live longer than purebred dogs. Some of the most recognizable dogs in the world, including Benji and Old Yeller, were mutts that were adopted from a shelter.All these dogs need is to be given a chance to prove their worth to a deserving family.
All dogs adopted from the ASC are vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped. Dogs are fitted with a collar and ID tag, but the ASC requests that potential adopters bring their own leash.
Tallahassee Animal Services operates the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center and Animal Control as part of the City of Tallahassee’s Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department.
