Twice a year, Children’s Medical Services holds a free, comprehensive, one-stop-shop screening event for children ages 6 months to 5 years old. Parents can bring their children to be screened for height/weight, vision, hearing, dental, developmental issues, social and emotional issues, speech, with an additional depression screening for their caregivers. Some parents come because they have a concern about their child’s development and need an entry into services, and some parents bring their children just to check them out and make sure that everything is going okay. In addition to receiving the screenings, referrals for any areas of concern are made by a “warm handoff,” where the parents are walked over to representatives from that agency and an appointment is scheduled for follow up with that agency before the family even leaves the event.
