2012 Leon County Sustainable Communities Summit

Got Green on the brain? And no, were not referring to money.
Were referring to eco-friendly initiatives. The sustainability of our county is the goal at the 2012 Leon County Sustainable Communities Summit on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Its a day-long event, which highlights the many ways individual actions serve to collectively foster a sustainable community.
Several areas will be featured ranging from Food and Gardening, and The Power of Community, to ideas for a greener home. Come enjoy keynote speakers Hazel Henderson and Janisse Ray.
Hazel Henderson, award-winning author and founder of Ethical Markets Media, LLC, will join the event via videoconference with the morning keynote address. The focus of her message will be Transitioning to Cleaner, Greener 21st Century Economies. Well-known author Janisse Ray will offer the luncheon keynote address. Ray will speak about “Seeds and the Movement to Save Food Diversity.
The events 16 break-out sessions include: A waste-free Summer, A Greener Home, Cultivating a Nature Connection and Backyard Livestock.
The 2012 Summit will take place at the Florida State University Turnbull Conference Center, 555 Pensacola St., Wednesday, Oct. 31 starting at 8 a.m. This years theme for the day-long event is Collaboration for a More Resilient Community. The theme builds upon the County’s previous summits in 2008 and 2010 and its co-hosted 2011 Sustainable YOU conference. This years summit is geared toward those interested in a more sustainable life and in learning about resources that exist within our community. The conference fee is $45, which covers breakfast, lunch, break-out sessions and exhibits.
Additionally, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has approved eight break-out sessions and nine sessions qualify for LEED AP Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits for its members.
