On Saturday, April 12, Lawrence, the 2014 “Country Breakout Independent Artist of the Year,” inaugurates the stage in a concert with rising country singer and songwriter Tyler Reeve.  With more than 13 million albums sold and 18 no. 1 singles including “Time Marches On,” and “Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” Lawrence performs at 9 p.m.  Reeves, a Florida State University graduate whose musical résumé includes performances with Willie Nelson, Lady Antebellum, Eric Church and Lynyrd Skynyrd opens at 7 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. Advance general admission tickets are $20 or $25 at the door, with reserved seating for $30 or $35 at the door, excluding service fees and taxes.

A seven-time Grammy-nominee, Wilson performs Sunday, April 13. He was recently honored with the 2013 BET Lifetime Achievement Award and is noted for his iconic songs including “My Love Is All I Have,” and “You Are.” Advance general admission tickets are $45 or $50 at the door, with reserved seating available for $70 or $75 at the door excluding taxes and fees. Gates open at 5 p.m. Comedian Marvin Dixon will open the show at 7 p.m.
For many, the park’s centerpiece is the graceful, sloping canopy of the Capital City Amphitheater. The multi-million dollar, 24-acre Cascades Park, officially opened
March 14. The amphitheater has 1,500 permanent seats, including handicap accessible seating as well as general admission, festival seating for 2,000 in the landscaped seating area along the gently sloped bowl. Concessions available include food, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages.

A literal centerpiece is Meridian Plaza where a marker designates the spot from which all surveys in Florida are calculated. The adjacent Cascade Fountain commemorates the selection of Florida’s capital in October 1823.

Discovery at Cascades, an initiative by the Knight Creative Communities Institute (KCCI), showcases a variety of Florida environments, habitat gardens and play areas for children.

Centennial Field and the Smokey Hollow Commemoration pay tribute to other periods of the city and park’s history. Centennial Field was originally built in 1924, commemorating Tallahassee’s 100th anniversary.  It hosted political rallies, graduations and other community events and served as the home field for Florida State University football (1947-49) and a semi-professional baseball team. From 1890 until it fell victim to urban renewal in the 1960s, Smokey Hollow was a thriving black community. Three “spirit houses” replicate the shotgun houses that were common in the neighborhood.  A fully restored barber shop is a tribute to the businesses that served the community.

The concerts coincide with a celebratory weekend that includes the April 12 spring football game by the defending BCS champion Florida State Seminoles. For information on other events, activities and special hotel rates, go to www.VisitTallahassee.com.
