BPW/Tallahassee Professional Development Meeting

Join us as we welcome Judge Josefina M. Tamayo, General Counsel for the Florida Department of Management Services as our speaker.  She will share her journey that spans a distinguished career and the unique life story of pioneering woman who continually fights for justice in every arena.
Josefina M. Tamayo is currently the General Counsel for the Department of Management Services in Tallahassee.  In 2010 she was appointed by the Governor of the State to Florida as a Circuit Judge in the Second Judicial Circuit of Florida.  The appointment continues Tamayo’s lifelong public service to the citizens of the State of Florida.  She was 1 of 16 circuit judges and 10 county court judges serving the residents of Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, and Wakulla Counties.  She was assigned to the Family Law and Criminal  Divisions in Leon County.
Josie Tamayo served as General Counsel for the Florida Department of Health with 30+ boards and councils overseeing regulated health care professions and industries with over 1 million licensees in areas that touch every aspect of Florida health care.
Josie served as the General Counsel for the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation with 20+ boards and commissions overseeing regulated professions and industries with on 1 million licensees in areas that touched every aspect of Florida consumer services.  Led an interdisciplinary team of division directors, policy makers, and attorneys in implementing a constitutionally-mandated regulatory scheme for the licensing, discipline, and regulation of slot machine licensing for pari-mutuel wagering facilities in Broward County.
Tamayo served as the 1st Hispanic General Counsel for the Florida Department of Children and Families.  She was responsible for directing all legal services functions of the Department.  Ensured quality while implementing change resulting from restructuring, leadership transitions, and a shift to community-based care.  Directed and supervised a staff of 443 lawyers and paraprofessionals.  Acted as legal advisor to the Secretary of the Department.
Prior to serving as General Counsel for four state agencies Josie served as Chief District Legal Counsel for the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitation Services, District 6 while simultaneously functioned as Managing Attorney for Foster Care Supervisor for District Legal Staff.  Josie served as Assistant State Attorney for the 13th Judicial Circuit (Tampa)  serving as Chief of two misdemeanor divisions and managed all phases of criminal prosecutions for felonies.
Tamayo served as an Assistant State Attorney in the 12th Judicial Circuit (Sarasota) where she exercised responsibility for all phases of criminal prosecutions, including capital child abuse cases and served as a Special Prosecutor for the DUI Division. Tamayo received her Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science from Emory University and Juris Doctor degree from Georgia State University.
Both of Josie Tamayo’s parents were professionals from Cuba.  Her father was a doctor and her mother was a lawyer.  Her parents fled Cuba after Fidel Castro took control of the country.  Tamayo was raised in Milledgeville, Georgia.
Judge Tamayo is married to Walter Ciliberto and has one teenage son, Joseph.  Favorite family activities are baseball, hunting, fishing, and travelling.
