TCC to host 5k fundraiser for low-income prospective students

Tallahassee Community College will serve as the starting point for a 5k walk/run Sunday, June 7, to raise funds for low-income prospective students.

Strides for Education, an event developed by Take Stock in Children, begins with registration at the TCC Workforce Development building at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. The race is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.

“This is our first event, but we do have a lot of people on board who are trying to help,” said TSIC mentor coordinator Wanda Lewis. “Anything we can do to make sure these students can attend college, be college-ready and become successful adults is our goal.”

The first 10 racers to cross the finish line will be eligible to receive $20 gift certificates from Sonny’s BBQ, Academy Sports, Wal-Mart and other sponsors. In addition, a representative from Comcast Cable will be present to discuss cable packages and distribute care bags from their company.

The TSIC grant program raises scholarship monies and provides weekly mentorships for students in sixth through ninth grades that would otherwise not be able to attend college due to low family income. The group primarily targets first-generation college students.

Individuals who wish to support Strides for Education but are unable to attend may contribute by visiting give.takestockinchildren.org and choosing “Gadsden, Leon, Wakulla” for the location of the event.

WCTV and Comcast Cable are assisting with the event. Wendell Johnson, TSIC program administrator, will appear Sunday, June 1, on the In the Spotlight segment of “WCTV Eyewitness News.”
